“Can” is a three letter word that stops doubt dead in it’s tracks.
When you tell someone, “You Can,” you fuel what people hope is true. You are watering the seed of faith God has already planted deep within them.
However you are more than a motivator — you are a kingdom agent. And for this purpose “can” is actually deceptively insufficient. “Can” may work temporarily because the human body and brain is able to work amazing feats when inspired, but “can” tires the human life force. After repeated let downs, “can” loses it’s will to go on.
Contrast for a minute the inspiring slogan, “You CAN make it” with what Jesus says in His double barrel shot gun blast against human sufficiency:
Shot 1 — John 15:4 “As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, neither can you.”
Shot 2 — John 15:5 “for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Jesus was a realist — not a motivator. Fortunately, he was much more than a realist — Jesus was reality! So he also was able to say in the next verse, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” NOW that is a CAN opener!
So what should you say to a person who needs to hear, “You CAN make it?” Here are three Can Openers to use in your witnessing.
1) “ABIDE in Jesus, and YOU CAN make it.” (“Whoever abides in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit.” — John 15:15
2) “TALK to Jesus, and YOU CAN make it.” (“Whatever you ask in MY name, I will do it.” — John 14:13)
3) “REST in Jesus, and YOU CAN make it.” (“Take heart, I has overcome the world.” — John 16:33)
Your first duty as a believer is to give out hope — make certain you aren’t pointing people back to themselves for their hope. A friend of mine (who has gone blind and had one leg amputated)and who is an avid witness among Muslims,) always said to me, “Give people hope and lot’s of it . . . why not, hope is free!”
I call this conversational method the “Can Opener” because hope opens hearts like nothing else. Instinctively people want to hope. When you use the word “can” people sense it’s truth and want to know more.
Whisper hope often.
Speak hope loud.
Speak hope confidently.
Pull people with hope.
Push people with hope.
Drag people out of despair with hope.
Remember the apostle Paul’s words, “I CAN do ALL things through Christ Jesus.”
